Work Environment Assessment and Workplace Civility

Work Environment Assessment Results and Civility in the Workplace

Conducting a Work Environment Assessment is crucial in evaluating the level of civility and overall workplace culture. Based on my assessment results, my workplace scored moderately on civility, indicating that while there are efforts to maintain professionalism and respect, there are still areas that require improvement. The assessment revealed strengths such as teamwork, open communication, and a commitment to patient care. However, it also highlighted challenges like occasional lack of recognition, hierarchical barriers, and instances of workplace incivility.

My workplace can be considered moderately civil due to the prevailing culture of teamwork and professional collaboration. Most employees interact with mutual respect and strive to support one another. Leadership plays a role in fostering civility by encouraging feedback and maintaining an open-door policy. However, occasional conflicts, misunderstandings, and a lack of clear communication sometimes contribute to workplace tension. The presence of stress due to high patient loads and administrative demands can also create an environment where incivility manifests in subtle ways, such as dismissive attitudes or unconstructive criticism.

Experience with Workplace Incivility

A notable experience of workplace incivility occurred when a senior nurse publicly reprimanded a junior colleague for a minor documentation error during a shift change. Instead of addressing the mistake privately and constructively, the senior nurse raised her voice in front of the team, leading to embarrassment and discomfort for the junior nurse. This incident not only affected the morale of the team but also created an atmosphere of fear and reluctance to ask questions or seek guidance.

The issue was addressed when another team member intervened and suggested that feedback should be given in a more professional manner. Later, the nurse manager held a meeting to reinforce the importance of maintaining a respectful and supportive work environment. A follow-up discussion was conducted with the senior nurse to highlight more appropriate ways to provide feedback. Additionally, staff were reminded about the organization’s policies on workplace civility, and strategies such as conflict resolution training were introduced to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Conclusion

Civility in the workplace is essential for fostering a positive and productive work environment. While my workplace demonstrates a moderate level of civility, there is always room for improvement. Addressing incivility through open communication, constructive feedback, and professional development programs can enhance workplace culture. Moving forward, implementing more structured initiatives such as peer support programs and leadership training can further strengthen workplace civility and improve team dynamics.
