You will produce a written report on a current ‘hot’ topic within the field of neuroscience, chosen from the list below. This will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your literature research skills and your ability to translate a complex set of ideas into a readily understandable form. You will be required to review and evaluate existing literature and produce a clear concise ‘newspaper’ or ‘magazine’ type report aimed at the general population. Be creative! I have suggested possible headlines, at the start of each question, these are shown in bold and red, however, you can choose your own headline and your own story angle based on one of the topic areas below. Think how these stories might be relevant to current issues and try to provide a context for them. You may use sub-headings and explanations of scientific jargon and tailor your article to appear in a scientific newspaper/magazine format. You must include author citations in the body of your work and you must include a reference list at the end.

1. Explain in detail the structure of the brain, the function of a range of different brain areas and demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between genes, hormones and the nervous system in the determination of human behaviour.
2. Consider the effects of brain damage, brain plasticity, the limitations of recovery and aspects of rehabilitation.
3. Demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of how our behaviour is affected by the brain, in particular the problems that may occur when normal brain functioning is interrupted or impaired.

2. To evaluate critically arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and data in order to make sound judgements and to achieve a solution to a problem.
3. Synthesize information from a variety of sources in order to devise and sustain arguments.
