Planning for Social Change Advocacy

Concerns about Health Quality and Equity in the Community:

As a professional nurse, I am deeply concerned about the disparities in health quality and access to care within my community. Many individuals, particularly those from low-income, minority, or rural backgrounds, face significant barriers to receiving timely and adequate healthcare services. These include lack of insurance, transportation issues, language barriers, and limited availability of culturally competent care. Chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and mental health disorders are often underdiagnosed and undertreated in underserved populations, further widening the health gap. Additionally, systemic inequities and social determinants of health — such as housing instability, food insecurity, and educational disparities — continue to perpetuate poor health outcomes.

Goals as a Professional Nurse and Social Change Agent:

  1. Advocate for Policy Change: I aim to collaborate with local health departments and policymakers to support and promote policies that expand access to healthcare, including Medicaid expansion, mobile clinics, and community health funding.

  2. Promote Health Education: I plan to develop and implement community-based health education programs that address preventable conditions, nutrition, mental health, and disease management in underserved areas.

  3. Enhance Cultural Competence in Care: By advocating for and participating in training programs, I will work to ensure that healthcare providers in my community deliver care that respects the diverse backgrounds of all patients.

  4. Strengthen Community Partnerships: I will engage with schools, faith-based organizations, and local nonprofits to create a network of support for individuals and families facing health challenges.

  5. Mentor Future Nurses: I want to mentor nursing students and new professionals, especially those from underrepresented communities, to foster a more diverse and inclusive healthcare workforce.

Through these efforts, I strive to be a catalyst for social change by promoting health equity, improving care quality, and ensuring that all members of my community have the opportunity to achieve optimal health.
