Fetal Development • Define the key terms needed to understand the pre-embryonic, embryonic and fetal stages. • Describe the process of fertilization, implantation, and cell differentiation. • How do twins and multiples develop? • Explain the functions of the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluid. • Outline normal fetal development from conception to birth. • Explain how maternal nutrition plays a role in fetal development, include nutritional guidelines during pregnancy. • Identify the vulnerable periods during which malformations may occur and describe the resulting congenital malformations.
Purpose: The following project is designed to promote learning via research, oral presentation, and peer evaluation. Outcomes: • Develop a presentation demonstrating an awareness of the value of research, sharing information and collaborative learning. • Demonstrate the ability to formally present to a small group of peers. • Examine a topic and its relationship to expected mother-baby outcomes and nursing research illustrating the importance of evidence-based practice. • Use the nursing process to improve critical thinking and problem solving skills. • Develop skills in peer evaluation. Criteria:  The assignment includes research and preparation, an APA reference page and a visual (handout, poster, or demonstration)  The following areas are evaluated: o Presentation content o Research skills o Oral and Visual presentation  Total time allotted to present is 20 minutes; each student should present for 15 minutes and allow for questions and answers for 5 minutes.  Individuals will submit their own research as an APA reference page to the instructor on the day of presentation. Guidelines: Content: 1. Present the selected topic demonstrating subject knowledge as outlined with the defined outcomes. 2. Use the nursing process to define a plan of care reflecting current nursing practice. Include your assessment, nursing diagnoses, plan, interventions and evaluation criteria. Prioritize your nursing concerns and discuss your rationale. 3. Demonstrate a clearly defined purpose, a logical flow of ideas, and well-organized sequence with an introduction and conclusion 4. Show a relationship between references and how all sources support your topic using professional terminology. 5. May include a patient or personal experience. Research skills: 1. Use 3-4 references in your research, which should include professional journals, professional websites, and books. MUST include at least one NURSING journal. 2.
