Spaceship Modeling Assignment
You will be modeling a spaceship using Maya’s modeling tools. You may create your own spaceship design if you wish, or you can use a concept from the Spaceship Inspirations design Module.
Technical/Creative Requirements:
· Can be any creative style that you wish
· Must show good use of topology
· Must have your objects named and grouped in the outliner
· Your spaceship must be made of multiple objects.
· Must use Autodesk Maya
Spaceship Modeling Assignment
Submission Requirements:
· You will be turning in 4 images in total for this project:
· 1 image from the Front view, with the display mode Wireframe on shaded active.
· 1 image from the Side view, with the display mode Wireframe on shaded active.
· 1 image from a Three-Quarters view, with the display mode Wireframe on shaded active.
· 1 image from a Three-Quarters view, with the display mode Smooth shade all active.

Answer:
Q1: What tools in Maya are used for modeling?
Modeling in Autodesk Maya relies on a combination of tools and workflows. Key tools include the Transform tool (to move, rotate, and scale objects), Selection tools (such as lasso, marquee, and paint select for precision picking), and Basic modeling tools (extrude, bevel, merge, and insert edge loop). Understanding the difference between object space and world space is essential for manipulating models accurately. These tools together enable the creation of complex, detailed forms like a spaceship.
Q2: What are the technical and creative requirements for the spaceship?
The spaceship can reflect any creative style—futuristic, retro, realistic, or stylized. From a technical standpoint, the model must demonstrate good topology, meaning clean edge flow, proper geometry, and avoidance of unnecessary faces or n-gons. The ship must be constructed from multiple objects to show modular design. The project requires both artistic creativity and solid technical execution.
Q3: How should objects be organized in the outliner?
Proper organization in Maya’s Outliner is crucial for efficiency. All components of the spaceship should be named clearly (e.g., “cockpit,” “wing_left,” “engine_rear”) rather than default object names. Related components should also be grouped logically, which allows for easier manipulation, animation, and further modifications down the line. This shows professional workflow discipline.
Q4: What software must be used for this project?
The project must be completed in Autodesk Maya. While other software can model similar designs, Maya ensures consistency in workflow, tools, and grading criteria. Using Maya also demonstrates industry-standard proficiency.
Q5: What images must be submitted and in what views/modes?
The submission requires four total images:
-
Front view with Wireframe on Shaded active.
-
Side view with Wireframe on Shaded active.
-
Three-quarters view with Wireframe on Shaded active.
-
Three-quarters view with Smooth Shade All active.
This combination ensures evaluators can assess both the geometry/topology and the final aesthetic of the spaceship.
