Overview

In this unit, you will explore diverse applications of behavior analysis in the areas such as education, medicine, safety, health and fitness, addiction, mental health, and environmental sustainability. We will explore how basic behavioral principles, including motivation, stimulus control, and reinforcement, can be applied to address socially significant problems with diverse populations. You will be challenged to think about and discuss ways to extend the reach of behavior analysis into more diverse settings, with varied populations. An overarching theme of these learning activities will be a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the study of behavior analysis. This unit primarily aligns to sections 1B and 2G of the

BACBs 5th Edition Task List.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you should be

able to:

1. describe how behavioral principles

(including motivation, stimulus control, and

reinforcement)

may be used to address socially significant

challenges with diverse populations

2. read and critically appraise behavior

analytic literature in specific sub-specialties

of applied

behaviour analysis

3. propose meaningful areas for future

research in behavior analysis

4. describe the importance of culture in service

delivery, and identify strategies to embrace

multiculturalism in diverse applications of

behaviour analysis

Active learning

You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with

relevant literature and resources. Further, you will be

encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic

areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by

participating in activities designed to extend your

understanding.

1 – Diverse application review (1600

words or equivalent)

Students must complete at least 90% of the directed

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the

learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per

teaching period consisting of a mixture of scheduled

learning activities and independent study.

Usually, you can expect to engage with:

• 12 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus

via weekly/regular directed learning activities, plus 33

hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a

combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed

learning activities and the remaining hours to be

allocated towards self-directed/independent study

OR

• 45 hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a

combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed

learning activities and the remaining hours to be

allocated towards self-directed/independent study^

^ International students studying in Australia are not

permitted to undertake this scheduled learning delivery

mode.

Scheduled learning activities may include a

combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed

learning and online engagement.
