KWY Mankurri-apinthiAustralian Refugee AssociationAustralian RedCrossThe Smith FamilyMINUS18An introduction is not required in this assessment. You can start by building a community organisation profile.
Section 1- Community Organisation and Program Description
This section includes a brief description of the chosen community development organisation and its mission, vision, and goals and a chosen program and service that has a focus on meeting community needs.
Include the following points in your description:
Briefly describe and examine the nature of the community organisation.
(For example, non-governmental organisation (NGO), for-profit organisation, charity-based, religion-based, local councils community development project, members-led community group, self-help group, action group).
Describe its location whether geographical or virtual organisation.
Briefly discuss the mission, vision, and goals of the community organisation.
Describe any one service and program being delivered having a direct interface with the community.
Describe who is involved in the service/ program and give a brief snapshot of the socio-demographic characteristics of the population served (e.g., age group, gender, educational level, health, employment status, and sources of income, etc.). Please note, only include the information that is known about the population group being served or you can provide a general knowledge of the population being served supported with research evidence.
Examine the issues faced by this population group. Are there human rights and social justice issues, powerlessness, and oppression faced by the community, structures, and institutional policies such as educational policy, immigration policy, employment, and housing policy impacting the community? Where and how does the population group feel disempowered that the program/service is trying to address?
Analysing this will set the scene for the analysis of community development processes in the next section to follow. Here, you can refer to relevant studies and draw insights from these studies to support your arguments of the issues faced by the community.
Provide a link to the selected organisation web site/ program page. Also add any weblink used to source the data, for ex: ABS website, or local council website.
Use a minimum of two academic references (Journal articles/ book chapters).
Word count approx. 600 words
Section 2- Critical Analysis of Community Development (CD) Processes
This section requires you to critically analyse the community development processes and their underlying principles in the running of a program/ service. Based on what you may know about the program/service, the population group served through this program, issues identified covered in section 1 and the knowledge gained in this course about community development principles, approaches, models, and workers roles and skills (week 1-week 5), critically analyse the community development processes by focusing on the following aspects.
Note: Please note you may not be able to find the exact terms and language of community development elements on the organization website, however, you must use this language based on your developed understanding of the community development.
Program Analysis
Identify and analyse the CD processes such as the bottom-up approach or top-down approach used in the program.
Who has decision-making power and how the population served is involved in the decisions affecting their lives?
Examine the formal and informal power used and how these power dynamics may be impacting the community development processes.
What processes are used to be inclusive and adhere to principles of valuing diversity, local knowledge, and holistic development?
Are people able to participate in decision making or their participation is tokenistic, if so, how do you know that?
You may analyse what processes are being adopted to empower people.
A way forward to work with the community.
Based on your analyses of the strengths and weaknesses of the program processes covered above, propose a way forward to work with this community. Discuss, as a community development worker how would you approach working with this community.
What processes will you adopt that are informed by the knowledge you have acquired in the course?
What has already worked well that could be further strengthened or what would you introduce or change to increase participation, decision-making, inclusivity, and empowering the community?
Discuss how you would build social capital and build their capacity to ensure they can control the processes of developmental work.
You would demonstrate your knowledge of CD principles roles and skills in answering this section.
A minimum of 6 academic references is required in this section.
Word count approx. 1000 words
